    Hey Suzanne, sorry for the late reply. When it comes to my own ecommerce store I’ve chosen to focus on what’ll bring in money instead of what I’m passionate about. The upside is that it’s profitable. The downside is that it can be hard to motivate myself some days. The ideal situation is to launch a store you’re passionate about that’s also highly profitable. What type of content do you like learning more about? Which topics excite you? Is there a part of that niche that’s really profitable? Are there any really trendy products within it you see a lot of people buying? That would be my recommendation for a starting point for you.

    Nicole, thank you SO much for this article! My wheels are definitely spinning…. But the question that creates doubt in my mind is how in the heck do I compete with Amazon? Can I really become successful with one of these niches on my own, when so many millions of people can just get it on Amazon? Is it really worth it to start a dropshipping store? Will I end up needing to sell my brand products on Amazon, too? It seems like a lot of work to monitor pricing there to constantly ensure I’m competitive. I’m not trying to be a downer, because I REALLY want to do this and even just bought a super cute domain name for my niche, but I just have these doubts….. 🙁

    Hey Nima, for my store we focus on impulse buy products and we sell on FB. This strategy works well for many dropshippers because when a person sees a product on Facebook they’re more likely to impulsively buy rather than do research. Keep in mind that even Walmart sells products that can be found on Amazon. And eBay. And countless other retailers. While it can be competitive, there’s always room in the market for you. People don’t only buy products because of they product. They’ll also buy because they love the brand. Build a great brand. With epic customer support. Create content that stands out. And you’ll have a fighting chance of standing out in this market. You’ve got this!

    Hi Vic! I didn’t get a reply yet, but I did Google some how-to articles about Shopify stores competing with Amazon, and there are a couple good ones out there! Got some good tips. But you’re right – I guess we dive in and just keep learning and researching how to make it succeed. The info is out there!     Nice to meet you, Victoria! 🙂 I’ve had bad luck with FB ads, but I know it’s because I need to learn HOW to create the best ads (which I’m studying right now!). I know a guy to grew a six-figure ecommerce store starting with a $5 FB ad. I think it’s about targeting, presentation, wording/copy, video vs. no video, and split testing. I think you don’t have to spend a lot, but you will if you don’t know what you’re doing. Lucky for us there is a ton of training out there. Just gotta go find it. There are so many facets to eCommerce and being successful! And you’re right – a minnow in the ocean! LOL. Go get ’em, Vic! 🙂

    So good to hear positive things for a change! Sadly, I get no support here at the house. It’s “why are you spending so much time on pipe dreams?” Lucky for me nature provided me with lots of those little stubbornness genes and they keep me going. I’m going to prove them wrong…hm! If you happened to save some of those great training videos, please share them. I’m going cross-eyed reading stuff about it and the terminology alone is a challenge for me.

    The goal isn’t to compete with Amazon. But the reality is Walmart, Amazon, etc also sell dropshipped products. So there’s room for multiple brands in the marketplace. I usually like to stick to impulse buy products. That way, when I market via FB ads customers see my product ad and are compelled to buy right now. If you were to market on Google ads people may be more likely to do research and they may even see competing ads. Niche stores can succeed. You might not become a multi billion dollar powerhouse like Amazon or Walmart, but it is possible to create something sustainable and profitable.

    Don’t let the doubts in your head hold you back. To be honest, I experience doubts every now and then too. I’m currently working on building a brand new store in a completely different niche. And even though I have the marketing experience, and success from previous stores, even I second guess myself. But over time I’ve gotten better at knowing the difference between thoughts that procrastinate me and thoughts that have legitimate concerns.

    It’s amazing that you bought your domain name. Next step is to just start building it out. Start slow. Add 25 products that you think your audience will love or with proven success. And then just start running ads. I usually like to stick to FB for the impulse buy factor (many merchants succeed with it too). Be conservative with your budget at first. I usually like to start a new store by creating ads that are the cost of the product. For example, if you’re charging $40 for the product then create a $40 ad.

    Hey Victoria, Love that you and Nima are having a great conversation. I responded to her message. I noticed you mentioned you get no support at home. Just wanted to let you know I feel you. I actually had the same problem. I lived with my parents and they were against me being an entrepreneur they kept telling me to get a real job. It really demotivated me and delayed my success. One of the things that worked well for me is that I stopped talking about my business with family. They’d see me on the computer but wouldn’t know what I was doing. I just kept quiet. They eventually stopped talking about it. And I felt happier because I knew I was on the right path. I wonder if you knew where I can find a link on how to run a FB ad on a small budget. I’ve just crashed and burned on my first one simply because I had no clue. So many variables, columns, categories, choices! I need a FB for dummies video…starting with “login”, click on this tab, this word means such and such, and so on. Is there such a thing? So far all the videos I’ve watched –and I’ve watched like 12 today, assume that the viewer is already familiar with the whole concept. If I keep throwing darts in the dark, it’s going to get very expensive for me. Hope you can help. Thanks again.

    Steemit sounds super interesting – I’ll check it out! 🙂 I’m so glad to hear of your stubbornness gene! Haha. I have it, too! Otherwise, I’d have quit a long time ago. I listened to a super powerful audiobook by Robert Kiyosaki called “Choose to Be Rich.” It was SO eye-opening. He compares many times over the different mindsets of “poor” thinking vs. “rich” thinking, and I realized I’ve spent my whole life with the “poor” mentality. I could see so many ways that my “poor” mentality has kept me from really pushing forward. He also talks about the huge benefits of owning your own business, and that 9 out of 10 small business attempts fail. So let me just say I am due for a success. Lol!

    Don’t give up! And I wholeheartedly agree with Nicole’s advice to button up and stop talking about your venture and eCommerce goals with the people who don’t see its potential. With this last attempt I decided to not tell a soul, except of course my husband. However, long ago I was able to convince him of the huge potential of an eCommerce business, so he is cheering me on. But I’ve also been in your and Nicole’s shoes of having naysayers try to shoot me down. Ooh – insert song, “You shoot me down, but I won’t fall, I am TITAAAAAANIUM!!!” Haha!

    Thank you so much for your transparency. It’s nice to hear you have doubts, too, but like you, I also now recognize when it’s just me distracting myself out of fear of moving forward. Or procrastinating, as you said. Your advice to so helpful. In the past I spent too much time adding way too many products and focusing on design instead of marketing. But then I realized recently it’s because I’m not confident in the marketing, so I just spent time (and money) on what I did best. *Insert X-Factor buzzer sound*

    I like your method of creating ads that are the cost of the product. I feel like I’m really learning this time around about how to do this the SMART way. I’m doing things differently than I did before, and I’m able to withstand those bad habits that made my business attempts fail in the past.

    Btw, is there some secret to knowing which products make good impulse buys?

    Hey Suzanne, sorry for the super delayed response. I usually stick to niches that make money but I can get exhausted of them quickly. I usually aim to narrow down my most profitable passions and stick with that. If the niche has a high search volume, brands of that niche have hundreds of thousands or millions of followers, there’s a good sign that it’s a profitable niche.

    Thanks for this article, I tried opening up a store with Shopify and Oberlo but after a bit of research I found that Dropshipping to South Africa is extremely limited if available at all. I found a website called Aliexpress agent but they are a bit pricey, they charge more than 23rds of what I can charge my clients for shipping. Are there any other methods/ recommendations for dropshipping?

    You need to check whether the supplier offers Epacket. Epacket is China’s Fedex. If they do offer it shipping to the US is 2- 3 weeks and very reliable. Fedex handles the final delivery in the US. Note this is only to the US.
    The only other way to speed things up is to use dropshippers that hold stock in your country or import your own stock. But then you’re not really dropshipping.

    Shipping to South Africa is really expensive and slow from China. I wouldn’t bother. Concentrate on the US market and ePacket even if you live in South Africa.

    Yes that’s exactly what I’m talking about. Returns are usually handled by the sellers. You have to pick quality products (lots of good reviews) and top sellers. This is very important.
