The latest data from the National Retail Federation shows that Walmart continues to lead as the top US retailer.

In 2019, the company brought in retail sales of $399.8 billion in the US—a 2.6 percent year-over-year increase. Not only that, but Walmart also increased the US share of its sales worldwide by three percentage points. In 2018, 73 percent of its global sales came from the US. This number increased to 76 percent in 2019.

The top US retailer also expanded its store footprint across the country, increasing the number of stores by 1.7 percent, from 5,263 stores in 2018 to 5,355 in 2019.

Walmart is expected to see even stronger growth in 2020. Already, fiscal data shows the top US retailer’s global revenue grew 6.7 percent last year. This was, in large part, credited to the company’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Walmart went the extra mile to ensure its stores and ecommerce operations were open and running smoothly to attend to the changing needs of US consumers. Even as traffic to its brick-and-mortar stores fell, visitors who did go to Walmart stores spent an average of 16.5 percent more.

The second on the list of the largest retailers in the US is Amazon. With $193.64 billion in US sales in 2019, this was a whopping 20.9 percent annual increase—eight times faster than the top US retailer’s growth.

Like Walmart, Amazon’s US retail sales also made up the majority of its global sales. In 2019, 77 percent of the sales it generated worldwide came from the US.

After Amazon, the third-biggest retailer in the US is The Kroger Co. The Cincinnati-based company’s US retail sales grew 1.4 percent to $122.28 billion in 2019, despite having reduced the number of stores countrywide from 3,035 in 2018 to 3,003 in 2019.

Costco and Walgreens complete the list of the five biggest retailers in the US. Costco’s 2019 US sales grew 9.3 percent to $111.75 billion, while Walgreens grew 6.2 percent to $104.53 billion.

Here are the remaining five largest retailers in the US and their 2019 retail sales figures.
