Recent data studying cart abandonment rate by industry shows that, as of January 2023, the sector with the highest cart abandonment rate is home and furniture. At 80.01%, this means that more than four out of every five people arriving at an online store selling furniture and/or other home products leave the site without purchasing anything after having added items to their shopping carts.

This is the highest cart abandonment rate the home and furniture sector has seen over the past 12 months. Its lowest rate came in May 2022, at 72.94%, after falling for at least three months straight. It rebounded to 76.97% the following month, and it continued to hover around this mark until the increase in January 2023 took it above 80%.

According to the list analyzing cart abandonment rate by industry, the luxury and jewelry sector follows in second place, with a rate of 79.43%—just 0.58 percentage points behind home and furniture. 

This is followed by the fashion, accessories, and apparel industry, with 76.39%, and the beauty and personal care industry, with 74.39%. In other words, around three out of every four shoppers arriving at online stores in these two industries do not complete their checkouts after adding items to their baskets.

Fifth on this list analyzing cart abandonment rate by industry is food and beverage, with 72.05%. This sector has experienced huge fluctuations in its cart abandonment rate over the past year. Its lowest rate of cart abandonment, registered in February 2022, was 54.83%. Just two months later, in April 2022, it surged to 72.68%—a 17.85 percentage point difference.

Multi-brand retail and pet care and veterinary services follow with cart abandonment rates of 68.98% and 62.01%, respectively. According to this list studying cart abandonment rate by industry, the sector with the lowest (and best) rate is consumer goods. Only around half (51.3%) of shoppers on these online stores abandon their carts.
